After you’ve been paying attention to contemporary culture, you’ll know that “Squid Game” is currently the most-watched television series on Netflix. “Squid Game” is not only bringing in millions of cash for the platform, but it is also introducing millions of people to the world of Korean film – and it is about time.

“Squid Game,” directed by South Korean Hwang Dong-Huyak, has surged into the global streaming ranks. With over 142 million streams since its September 17 debut, “Squid Game” has surpassed worldwide successes such as Netflix’s own “The Witcher” and “Bridgerdon.” This is an incredible achievement, especially considering the game’s $2.8 million budget.

The “Hunger Games”-styled series brings to light a variety of modern-day topics, challenging the existing quo and what we so readily accept. It’s a narrative about labour exploitation, wealth disparity, and defeat in the face of capitalism’s debilitating reality, all brought to life by superb acting and writing.

“We live in a period when individuals unknowingly embrace neoliberal thinking,” director Hwang Dong-Huyak said in a New York Times interview, “therefore I think people may empathise with the scenario.”

“Squid Game” is set in South Korea, a country that, like the United States, suffers from significant income disparity. A hidden organisation headed by masked elites recruits people in tremendous debt or financial distress to participate in a series of classic Korean “playground games” in order to be the lone winner of a 46 billion won prize.

Someone who does not complete the game are eliminated. Literally. Despite the imminent prospect of death, the competitors — who have agreed to participate in these games — determine that living in the real world is a destiny almost as bad as death and continue in the tournament.

It’s nothing new for Korean films to make their way to the West. Films like “Parasite,” directed by Academy Award winner Bong Joon-ho, and “The Handmaiden,” directed by Park Chan-wook, were huge triumphs in American cinemas — but they pale in comparison to Netflix’s newest release’s immense popularity and appreciation.

J-Hope offers his critique of Jungkook’s version of Harry Styles’ Falling

Jungkook of BTS stunned fans by releasing a rendition of Falling. The song was initially performed by Harry Styles as part of his 2019 album Fine Line. Jeon Boo Yeon, HYBE’s Studio engineer, recorded and mixed the song, which was posted on YouTube. It rapidly piqued followers’ interest, and within an hour, the video had topped two million views on the platform.

J-Hope, another member of BTS, was taken aback by Jungkook’s version of Falling. The rapper took to Weverse and asked Jungkook when he was able to record the song. He also gave his opinion on the song. “When did you make this (song)… it’s wonderful,” J-Hope said, according to the BTS fan account @BTStranslation_.

Fans have also showered the song with affection. A fan remarked, “Jungkook’s voice is what falling in love feels like.” “Jungkook’s cover of Harry Styles’ Falling was the cover we never knew we needed,” said another.

Some others were also surprised to learn that his rendition of Falling was released exactly two years after BTS’ final in-person concert. On October 29, BTS held their final concert of the BTS World Tour Love Yourself: Speak Yourself. It was held in Seoul, South Korea.

“Jungkook uploaded a rendition of ‘falling’ by Harry Styles, and today also marks 2 years since BTS’s final live concert before the epidemic,” a fan said.

BTS has planned a Map of the Soul tour for 2020. However, owing to the epidemic, it was postponed and then cancelled. BTS has begun organising internet concerts. The most recent one, Permission to Dance on Stage, took place on Sunday. Meanwhile, this isn’t the first time Jungkook has recorded renditions of popular songs from around the world. Previously, he covered Adam Levine’s Lost Stars, Justin Bieber’s Nothing Like Us and Purpose, Charlie Puth’s We Don’t Talk Anymore, Lauv’s Never Not, and Dan + Shay and Justin Bieber’s 10,000 Hours.

Prevention is preferable than Cure: World Stroke Day

After actor Sidharth Shukla died at the age of 40 from a heart attack, the whole television business was stunned. This was the period when some members of the business realised the value of working hard but not at the expense of their own lives. Actor Rahul Roy suffered a brain stroke in 2020, and after learning about Shukla’s death, he warned performers not to let work get the best of them.

It’s not just about the actors. According to the Indian Stroke Association, 17 million people have a stroke each year, with six million dying and five million permanently handicapped. Because of insufficient prevention and stroke management facilities, 80 percent of stroke deaths occur in low- and middle-income nations, including India. Lack of knowledge about the disease’s indications and symptoms contributes significantly to its status as a leading cause of death and disability in India.

A stroke happens when the blood flow to a specific area of the brain is stopped or decreased. It deprives brain tissue of critical nutrition and oxygen, causing the cells to die. There are two forms of stroke: those caused by a blocked artery (ischemic stroke) and those caused by a blood vessel leak (haemorrhagic stroke). A transient ischemic attack occurs when there is a momentary disturbance in blood flow to the brain that does not result in long-term symptoms.

The most frequent form of stroke is an ischemic stroke, which occurs when blood arteries in the brain become clogged or narrow, reducing blood flow. Clogged blood vessels are caused by fatty deposits that accumulate in the arteries or by blood clots that travel from the circulation to the blood artery in the brain. Haemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures or leaks as a result of certain medical disorders. Uncontrolled high blood pressure, trauma, protein deposits in blood vessel walls, ischemic stroke leading to bleeding, overtreatment with blood thinners, and bulges at weak points in the blood vessel walls are examples of these diseases.

A trip to one of Hollywood’s favourite movie graveyards

Hollywood's

Mountain View Cemetery is located in the shadow of the San Gabriel Mountains just west of Pasadena. It is hardly the flashiest graveyard in the greater Los Angeles area. While Hollywood Forever and Forest Lawn are well-known final resting places for Walt Disney, Judy Garland, Clark Gable, and Dorothy Dandridge, and host everything from movie screenings to haunted tours, Mountain View is more focused on local Civil War ghosts and the ashes of original TV Superman George Reeves. Forest Lawn is home to Jean Harlow’s marble mausoleum, as well as Hollywood Forever, a (perfect) statue of Johnny Ramone. Mountain View features a blog that is meticulously maintained.

However, that is not the only thing it possesses. This Altadena cemetery’s most unique secondary revenue source is smack dab between two plots containing genuine human remains: “an empty grave we have that’s secured with steel so actors can go inside,” according to Mountain View’s office and operations manager, Luis Treto.

One of the most wonderful and irritating aspects of Los Angeles is that no one appears to know that discussing an important aspect of their business would create a sinkhole in the typical person’s head. I spent much of my life believing that every funeral scene was shot on a studio lot that has been in operation since the silent period. Most producers, however, prefer on-site authenticity, whether it means converting a local park or employing the nearest cemetery willing to work with the location budget (see Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s improvement from a parking-lot graveyard to a genuine one in Pico-Union). If you, like me, thought filming campy sequences in the middle of a field of corpses was unethical, well, here’s your chance.

Outside of my personal encounters with death, all of my beliefs about death came from… well, movies. Many of them were aimed directly at me. The Grave is still grossly underappreciated. But, like with any excellent character actor, you’ll never hear the Grave mention it.
