Are you experiencing bipolar symptoms as a result of your PCOS? Here’s how hormonal and mental problems are linked.

Polycystic Ovary Disease (PCOD), also known as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, is a major health concern that has taken the world of women by storm (PCOS). The latter is one of the most frequent endocrine illnesses among reproductive-age women in India, affecting at least one out of every ten women.

Missed, irregular, infrequent, or prolonged periods are indications of PCOS, as are excess androgens, which cause acne and unsightly body and facial hair in girls. It raises the risk of various health problems such as diabetes and high blood pressure, darker skin or extra skin on the neck or armpits, mood swings, pelvic pain, and/or weight gain, however cysts on the ovaries are not present in all women with PCOS.

“PCOS is a serious genetic, reproductive, and metabolic condition and is one of the top reasons of female infertility in India,” says Padmasree Dr Alka Kriplani, Director and Head-Centre for Minimally Invasive Gynaecology, Obstetrics, and ART at Paras Hospitals in Gurgaon. It interferes with the ovaries’ ability to function, resulting in irregular periods, an overabundance of androgens (male hormones) in the body, and polycystic ovaries.”

“Women with PCOS face a variety of physiological concerns, including excessive body hair, weight gain, acne, and infertility if the condition is not effectively treated,” she continues. But it doesn’t end there. According to research, women with this illness are more prone to experience mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder.”

PCOS-related mental health disorders include:

  1. Anxiety
  2. Bipolar illness
  3. Depressive illnesses that are severe
  4. Bulimia nervosa
  5. eating disorders
  6. Somatizations (physical manifestations of negative mental states)
  7. Interpersonal awareness

Other symptoms connected with PCOS, such as excessive hair growth and acne, are also linked to low self-esteem, according to Dr. “All of these things can induce extreme mood swings and a general sense of insecurity.” It’s not that they don’t feel bad about their mood swings and inability to cope with life. All of these conflicting emotions exacerbate their mental condition and can exacerbate depression and anxiety symptoms.”
