The 93rd Academy award (Oscars 2021) paid tribute to actor Irrfan Khan and Oscar winning costume designer Bhanu Athaiya at the ceremony on Monday, April 26. The two were featured in the Memoriam segment during the ceremony.
Actor Irrfan Khan earned global recognition from his Hollywood films like Life of Pi, Jurassic World, Inferno and others. Bhanu Athaiya was the first Indian who won the Academy award for Best Costume Design in 1982 for Gandhi.
Frieda pinto, co-actor of Irrfan Khan in Slumdog Millionaire, shared her memories with the iconic actor. She wrote, “There was simply no one like Irrfan Khan. His grace and dignity along with his monumental talent as an artist, actor- a portrayer of humanity in all its shape and forms- made me not only have deep admiration for him but I instinctively wanted to emulate that grace in my career as well.”
The Academy also paid tribute to Max Von Sydow, Sean Connery, Diana Rigg, Helen McCrory, Chadwick Boseman, Cicely Tyson among others.
The award ceremony was earlier scheduled for February, but got delayed due to novel corona virus pandemic. The Oscars 2021 are being held in Los Angeles at Dolby Theatre and Union Station.
