Malayalam film has been at the vanguard of this significant upheaval during the last two years, when India’s OTT platforms have truly grown into their own. Not only that, but Malayalam actors like as Fahadh Faasil, Prithviraj Sukumaran, Kunchacko Boban, Jayasurya, and Tovino Thomas have established themselves as household names in India.
One contemporary Malayalam film star’s name is absent from the list. The effervescent Nivin Pauly happens to be one of them. Neram (2013), 1983 (2014), Ohm Shanthi Oshaana (2014), Bangalore Days (2014), Vadakkan Selfie (2015), Njandukalude Nattil Oridavela (2017), Love Action Drama (2019), Moothon (2019), and Premam (2019) were among his big blockbusters in Malayalam cinema over the preceding decade (2015). The latter is among the top ten highest-grossing Malayalam films of all time.
Nivin Pauly has yet to release a single in 2020 or this year. This means that, unlike some of his more well-known peers in Malayalam film, he has yet to feature on any OTT platform.
But Pauly’s Kanakam Kaamini Kalaham has the potential to transform everything. His home production, this quirky Malayalam comedic escapade, will launch on Disney+ Hotstar on November 12.
Kanakam Kaamini Kalaham is also the first Malayalam film to be released exclusively on Disney+ Hotstar. Amazon Prime has the most Malayalam film releases among the OTTs having a pan-India audience. “Nayattu,” which was sponsored by Netflix and received critical praise, was followed by SonyLIV’s recent debut of “Kaanekaane.”
The trailer for the film was released two weeks ago, and based on it, one gets the impression that spectators are in for a wild journey, since the film stars a slew of eccentric characters. In the film, Pauly is claimed to portray an acting teacher.
The film is directed by Balakrishnan Poduval, who made a name for himself with his Android Kunjappan. His last film was about a robot who kept an elderly person company in a residence where the humans were preoccupied with their everyday tasks.
