There is good news for Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal. This year, the script of their maiden production ‘Girls Will Be Girls’ is selected for Gotham Week. Gotham Week was formerly known as IFP. GWBG is the only Indian film that has been selected by them so far. Girls will be Girls is written and is to be directed by filmmaker Shuchi Talati.
Gotham Week is a prestigious global film market. Here established and emerging filmmakers get the opportunity to network. The networking can be done with film financiers, sales agents, and producers. The annual event brings together some of the best storytellers from films, TV, and audio. Gotham Week is sponsored by Netflix, Amazon Studios, Audible, SAGindie, and WarnerMedia.
‘Girls will be Girls’ is an Indo-French co-production. The partners are “Pushing Burtons Studio, Crawling Angel Films and Dolce Vita Films”. The team recently wrapped up a shoot for a pitch video/teaser. The production partners are hopeful that this will help with fundraising.
The script was at Berlinale Script Station earlier this year. Also, this is the only Indian project chosen for the Jerusalem Film Lab. This event will take place end of August. Richa said, “We hope to be able to find like-minded investors. Many collaborators at Gotham Week are to join us in making this exciting film. It is a fresh and feminist story. I believe Shuchi is a new voice in Indian cinema.”
Shuchi added, “Girls Will Be Girls deals with power dynamics and female sexuality. I’ve always thought the story would resonate internationally. So, I’m really happy about this selection. I hope Gotham Week will be a launchpad for us as we fundraise. Also, we are building a mostly female crew—I hope people reach out to us.”
