In an era where smartphones have seamlessly integrated into our lives, becoming an indispensable part of our daily routines, the sentiment of being unable to function without them resonates widely. Yet, amidst this prevailing dependence on handheld devices, there is an exception in the form of seasoned actor Aasif Sheikh. Known for his iconic character Vibhuti Narayan Mishra in the immensely popular &TV show Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain, Sheikh stands apart as an individual who defies the norm of constant phone usage. Amidst one of the show’s storylines that addresses the growing disconnection among people due to excessive usage of phone in the show, Sheikh recently shared his unconventional approach to technology. The actor consciously steers away from the lure of cell phones during shooting schedules, opting for a practice known as Digital Detoxing. In this candid revelation, Sheikh shares insights into his deliberate choice to shun smartphone usage, emphasizing how this intentional disconnect allows him to maintain focus and enhance his creative process.

Speaking about the disadvantages of using a cell phone while shooting, Aasif Sheikh reveals, “In the recent track of Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain, it was shown that everyone became so engrossed in their phones that they felt handicapped when their cell phones were taken away. Consequently, they missed important meetings, became frustrated, and felt bored. This current track serves as a perfect example of how excessive use of cell phones is leading to people to feel handicapped without phone. I always keep my phone in my makeup room and refrain from taking it onto the sets to avoid inviting distractions, as it’s a part of my mini ‘Digital Detox.’ While rehearsing, phone notifications often cause distractions, diverting attention and leading to checking the phone. It’s become a habit for me to give my utmost focus while working, avoiding distractions, and prioritizing tasks. It’s quite challenging to be productive when your phone keeps beeping or vibrating. Social networking platforms have a strong pull as well. I follow a practice where people who know me well understand that my lack of response to their calls means I am engrossed in work. Observing people becoming overly reliant on their phones, I acknowledge the increased use of social media. I am not against it, but I advocate for setting limitations. My use of social media is primarily to engage with my fans and stay connected with them a few times a day.”

He adds, “Moreover, while there are advantages, there are also downsides. I firmly believe that cell phones have affected our ability to concentrate. Presently, people are easily distracted by the multitude of activities happening both on their phones and in their minds. I’ve witnessed the evolution of cell phones and how people used to be more focused and alert in the past. There’s a saying that resonates deeply with me, ‘Technology should be used to enhance your life, not become your life.’ I encourage everyone to consciously detach from their cell phones for at least an hour or two; it’s an excellent way to detox and regain focus.”
