The long-awaited trailer for Kabir Khan’s 83 is now here. The film, which stars Ranveer Singh as Kapil Dev and Deepika Padukone as Romi Bhatia, recounts Dev’s life as he leads India to its first World Cup triumph in 1983.

Prior to India’s triumph in the 1983 Cricket World Cup, the Indian cricket team was not seen as on par with cricketing behemoths such as the West Indies and Australia. Furthermore, the team had not made it to the final match before Dev’s side not only defeated England in the semi-finals, but also won the championship.

The video opens by demonstrating how the Indian cricket team had little popularity and was viewed as a group of inexperienced players working from a place of mistaken zeal and confidence.

Ranveer Singh perfectly captures Kapil Dev’s demeanour, right down to his Punjabi pronunciation and bowling and batting techniques. The teaser also shows how Dev played an important part in keeping the squad together and leading them with sportsmanship and energy. Other cast members include Pankaj Tripathi (PR Man Singh), Tahir Raj Bhasin (Sunil Gaveskar), Jiiva (Krishnamachari Srikkanth), Saqib Saleem (Mohinder Amarnath), and Nishant Dahiya (Roger Binny).

Although all of the characters are vital, Saleem and Dahiya’s roles will be crucial, much as Amarnath and Binny were in ensuring India’s World Cup win.

Romi Bhatia, played by Deepika Padukone, looks to be a lovely woman who supports and cheers on her husband as he attempts to realise an unattainable ambition. “I recall Madan [Lal] standing on top of the steps outside the dressing room and signalling to us to ‘Go Back.'”

When we asked him why, he said, ‘Bura haal hai, 17 for 5 Go Back.’ That is my most vivid recollection (laughs). We stayed, though, because the motel was a long distance away. We told ourselves, ‘Ab jo hai dekhi jayagee’ (We’ll see what happens). Let’s simply remain here. “We went and sat in one part of the stands,” she explained.

The film will be released in theatres on December 24th. What were your thoughts on the trailer? Tell us in the comments.
