Padma Shri award-winning boxer Dingko Singh breathed his last in Imphal on Thursday, June 10. Dingko was suffering from liver cancer. He was 42.

The Sports fraternity and Bollywood industry paid tribute to Singh on social media and offered their condolences to the family. Actor Shahid Kapoor paid tribute on social media and mentioned that Dingko was one of the finest boxers and is a source of inspiration for the young generations.

Shahid took to Twitter, on Thursday evening and wrote, “Padma Shri Dingko Singh was one of the finest boxers, an award-winning sports person who’s brought glory to our nation several times. He will always remain a source of inspiration for the young generations. My sincere condolences to his dear ones. May his soul rest in peace.”

Earlier the same day, actor-filmmaker Farhan Akhtar also paid tribute to the boxer. Taking to Twitter he wrote, “RIP Dingko Singh. You will always be remembered for the glory you brought to our country in the ring. Deepest condolences to the family. #Boxer #AsianGamesGoldMedalist.”

Actor Randeep Hooda too took to Twitter to pay tribute. He tweeted, “A boxing legend that inspired so many that continue to follow in his footsteps… RIP N Dingko Singh. He put hope back in the sport of boxing by winning gold in Asian Games in Bangkok in 1998. A true son of Manipur, India.

Film director Raja Krishna Menon, who will be directing the biopic of Dingko Singh also paid tribute to the late boxer. Speaking to the news agency he said, “It is unfortunate and terrible. This has come as a shock. I knew he was ill and suffering, but I didn’t know it was this bad. He was a wonderful human being and a spiritual person. Unfortunately, we couldn’t make the film before he could have seen it.”

About Dingko Singh

The Manipur-born boxer was one of the finest Indian boxer. He won Arjuna award and Asian Games gold in 1998 and was honored Padma Shri in 2013 by the government of India for his contribution in sports. In 2020, he was tested positive for covid-19 and later he recovered from the deadly virus but he had to undergo radiation therapy for liver treatment.
