Spain’s most high-profile group of female filmmakers denounced the San Sebastian film festival’s decision to award Johnny Depp its highest honor for acting on Monday Aug. 9, 2021. Johnny Depp recently gave his first interview to The Sunday Times, ever since losing a libel case against a UK tabloid in 2020, in which he discussed on the trouble he is facing in releasing his upcoming film, Minamata. The actor discussed how his film’s release has been halted, calling his situation messy and unpleasant. The actor also said that how Hollywood is trying to boycott him from the industry.

Depp also discussed the release of Minamata has led to many obstacles in his personal life. Depp told The Sunday Times that he would like to add something to his current predicament. Talking about the same he said, “We looked these people in the eyeballs and promised we would not be exploitative. That the film would be respectful. I believe that we’ve kept our end of the bargain, but those who came in later should also maintain theirs”.

Further, adding the reason of releasing the film and why it is important for the film to be viewed. Depp said, “And this affects those in Minamata and people who experience similar things. And for anything… For Hollywood’s boycott of me? One man, one actor in an unpleasant and messy situation, over the last number of years?”

The release of 58-year-old actor’s film Minamat is still halted in the United States, as MGM has placed it on “TBA” (To Be Announced) status following the actor’s libel action in the United Kingdom. After his loss against the UK tabloid that referred to him as a “wife beater,” the actor exited the Fantastic Beasts franchise, where he played Gellert Grindelwald, and the role will now be played by Mads Mikkelsen in the third part.

Earlier in this month, the actor won a small victory, when he obtained information about Amber Heard’s planned payment to a charity in relation to their divorce settlement total. The legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard is still ongoing.
