A two-minute video clip of a Theyyam ritual dancer in northern Kerala comforting a Muslim woman wearing a veil has gone popular on social media.

The video went viral on the internet since it was released at a time when a dispute over burqas was raging in neighbouring Karnataka.

During a Theyyam festival performance, the lead artist, “Muthappan,” observed a middle-aged woman with a $20 bill waiting to see him to ask blessing. He quickly dialled the woman’s number, MT Ramlath, a Kasaragod resident from Padna.

“Come in.” You aren’t a stranger. Do you consider yourself to be unique because of your religion or caste? “No, we’re all one,” Muthappan responded, tearing her up. Muthappan took both of her hands in his and urged her to tell him about her fears and problems.

She sobbed as she narrated her sorrows in hushed tones.

“I’m sure you’re perplexed that despite praying five times a day, you still don’t feel at ease. Keep your faith strong, and the Almighty will assist you. “You have Muthappan’s blessings as well,” the ritual performer was seen assuring the mother of four.

She came to the festival location to see Muthappan, who was wallowing in poverty and penury after her husband lost his job in Mumbai due to Covid two years ago. These days, devotees in north Malabar hold Theyyam rituals in their homes after fulfilling their pledges or commitments.

The rite was conducted at the home of one of her neighbours, PV Balakrishnan, and footage was taken by his cousin, electrician KV Shaju. Shaju claimed he casually shared the video on Tuesday and had no idea it would get so much attention.
