At an Atlanta Bank of America branch, Black Panther director Ryan Coogler was mistaken for a bank robber and briefly held until local police officers discovered he was “never in the wrong.”
Coogler’s incarceration was a case of mistaken identification, according to Atlanta police, and Bank of America has apologised to the Hollywood filmmaker. In exchange, Coogler has accepted the apologies. “This issue should never have happened in the first place.” Bank of America, on the other hand, worked with me and resolved the issue to my satisfaction, and we have since moved on.
Coogler and two friends were briefly stopped outside the bank in a running automobile by authorities sent to the scene. Coogler had inadvertently given a female bank teller a “withdrawn slip with notation put on the back of the withdrawn slip to be discreet when delivering him the cash,” which triggered the call.
According to the complaint, Coogler, who had a California driver’s licence and a Bank of America account card on him, demanded more than $10,000.
“After receiving an alarm notice from Mr. Coogler’s account, the bank teller immediately informed her management that suspect # 3 [Coogler] is attempting to loot the bank.” “911 was notified and sent,” according to the police report. When police got on the scene, they located a black Lexus SUV parked outside the bank with the engine running and two people sat inside, a lady and a guy.
The two said they were waiting for Coogler, “who is doing a money transaction inside of the bank and is a movie producer,” according to the cops. When asked for a description of Coogler and what he was wearing, the police said it “fit the description of the man suspect who is attempting to rob the Bank of America,” and they put both car occupants in the back of a City of Atlanta-marked patrol vehicle without handcuffing them.
Coogler, who was deemed a suspect at the time, was also carried out of the bank by two officers in handcuffs, according to the police incident report. However, as the inquiry progressed, the cops on the scene came to the conclusion that Coogler had been misidentified for a bank robber.
