The Most Recent Box Office Milestone for “Top Gun: Maverick” Is $900 Million

In the latest achievement for the Paramount and Skydance film, Top Gun: Maverick has become only the third Hollywood production of the modern age to surpass $900 million at the global box office.

The achievement was made by the movie directed by Joseph Kosinski on Monday, when it finished the day with a domestic total of $474.8 million and an international total of $427.1 million, for a global total of $901.9 million.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness from Marvel and Disney has made close to $950 million worldwide, while Spider-Man: No Way Home from Sony and Disney has taken in close to $1.9 billion.

More than 16% of Top Gun 2’s audience has watched the movie more than once in a theatre, with 4% having seen it four times or more, according to Paramount.

2018’s Mission: Impossible — Fallout, which brought in $791 million worldwide, was surpassed by Top Gun: Maverick last week to become Cruise’s all-time highest-grossing film at the worldwide box office, unadjusted for inflation.

In addition, Top Gun: Maverick is Paramount’s top live-action film in 15 countries, including the United Kingdom, Australia, France, and Brazil. It is also the studio’s second-highest-grossing original domestic production, after Titanic.

Maverick has benefited from exceptional word-of-mouth, according to Top Gun. The much-anticipated sequel received a 96 percent approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and a coveted A+ CinemaScore from audiences. The lack of a release in China and Russia, according to box office sources, is the sole reason Top Gun: Maverick could not reach $1 billion.

When Top Gun: Maverick overtook War of the Worlds ($234.3 million at the US box office), it was already the highest-grossing movie for Cruise.

With an estimated $8.4 million, Jurassic World Dominion dominated Juneteenth, bringing in close to $260 million domestically and close to $630 million internationally over the course of 11 days.

Lightyear finished in third on Monday with $6.6 million for a four-day domestic total of $57 million after debuting to a muted $51 million over the weekend.
