Anek, starring Ayushmann Khurrana, will be available on Netflix, the streaming service said. Anubhav Sinha’s political thriller, which debuted in theatres at the end of May, earned Rs. 8.15 crore at the box office.
Similar to Anek, a number of movies, including RRR by SS Rajamouli, Beast by Vijay, and Acharya in Telugu, have chosen rapid OTT debuts to make up for box office losses, reigniting the discussion over the narrowing window between theatrical and digital distribution of movies. In contrast, the disappointing reception to the Ram Charan-starring Telugu film RRR has caused it to premiere on OTT within two months of its scheduled release. Less than a month after their theatrical debut, a number of additional movies are available to watch.
Film producers may demand a premium of between Rs. 5 crore and Rs. 10 crores from the streaming platform by reducing the time between theatrical release and digital distribution. Analysts claim that producers are unwilling to acknowledge the diminished influence of the theatrical medium. Lower attendance, particularly in north India, is being caused by high ticket costs and more viewers discovering OTT during the previous two years.
On OTT services, movies unquestionably draw viewers. Four Indian movies were among the top 10 foreign films on Netflix for the week of May 16–22. With 8.8 million, 7.1 million, 4.4 million, and 2.5 million hours seen, respectively, they comprised Gangubai Kathiawadi, RRR (in Hindi), Jersey, and Raw (in Hindi).
Ayushmann Khurrana most recently appeared with Vaani Kapoor in the Abhishek Kapoor-directed film Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui. Anubhuti Kashyap’s next social drama Doctor G, which is being made by Junglee Pictures, has the actor quite busy right now. In supporting parts, the movie also features Rakul Preet Singh, Shefali Shah, and Sheeba Chaddha. Additionally, Ayushmann and Jaideep Ahlawat are working together on the movie An Action Hero, which is being co-produced by Colour Yellow and T-Series.
