If you are into history and like period drama, this one is a must watch. The German language series set within the Austrian royal family, follows the story of an unlikely relationship between the rebellious Elisabeth and Emperor Franz. If you liked Bridgeton and The Crown, this one is a must watch.

The Empress has 6 episodes, but a lot happens in these episodes, and we are ready for a Season 2. The show is based on the life of Empress Sisi, who married Emperor Franz Ferdinand. She was a kind, free-spirited girl who loved to explore the countryside and creative activities. Married at a young age, she was not a fan of Vienna court life. She found it boring and full of norms. According to Tatler, she was a common topic of gossip thanks to her habits of smoking, riding, partying with her husband’s brother and gymnastics.

As history goes, Franz was to marry Helene, Elizabeth’s older sister but when both sisters showed up at Franz’ s 23rd birthday, he fell in love with Elizabeth. After a short rosy relationship, the new Empress gets a taste of the political tensions and rift with her husband’s family members.

She has great sympathy for the poorly treated workers and by the end of it, Franz’ mother insists she goes back home to Bavaria and have her marriage annulled or stay in the palace and conform.

She decides to leave the palace, but a huge crowd blocks her path. She insists the gates be opened and addresses the crowd, telling them “I see you” and announces her pregnancy publicly.

That’s how Season 1 end!
