The movie Annapoorani has been caught up in a web of controversies ever since its release on Netflix, calling it “controversial” and is said to ‘promote love jihad.’

The film is about a woman, who wants to become a chef but due to her father being a priest, her family stands in the way of her cooking and eating meat.

During a recent interview with Zoom, Mahesh Bhatt talked about the above movie and said, “We globally live in very sensitive times and people who are in connection with the business of mass entertainment, are compelled to reach out to the optimal number of people. Only then you can get what you call resounding success. Over the years, the world has drastically changed and earlier the responses of our movies would come to us filtered through the gatekeepers- the mainstream media.”

Further on, he said, “Now, in this, digital age, each individual has access to exhale and express without any inhibition with his or her responses to anything more popular. Any entertainer or storyteller, a filmmaker has never been more vulnerable, at any point in history, as it is today. To impose the world should be like this, is a utopian idea. The question is not it should be this way. The question is what are we dealing with? They are dealing with responses that flare up emotions and then what you have spend a sizeable amount of your life making is knocked off air right now. Whether that should be done or not done, is for the esteemed judges of the court to decide.”

The movie is no longer playing on Netflix and a formal apology has been issued.
