If you treat yourself to a latte or soda every now and again, you’re not doing your body any harm. However, if you consume these sugary beverages on a daily basis, it’s a different story. Drinking sugary beverages on a regular basis may be causing more harm to your health than you know, especially as you become older.

Fortunately, we surveyed a number of experienced dietitians to determine which drinking behaviours everyone over the age of 50 should avoid, so you can begin making better long-term decisions for your body. Here’s what they suggest, and check out our list of the 112 Most Popular Sodas Ranked by How Toxic They Are for much more drinking advice. Someone of age can benefit from avoiding much sugar, but those over 50 should take extra care to limit their intake.

“Alcohol is commonly referred to as ’empty calories,’ meaning that it offers calories but no nutritious benefit to the body,” Roosevelt says. “Even non-sugar alcohol choices may contribute to weight gain since liquid calories lack fibre, protein, fat, or any other nutrients that help you feel full and content. This can lead to overeating and perhaps missing a more nutritious meal in favour of that second glass of beer or wine.”

“Dehydration and constipation might occur if you don’t drink enough water. While it’s vital to consume high-fibre meals to avoid constipation, fibre works best when it’s combined with plenty of fluids. To make water more appetising, add lemon, mint, or even a dash of your favourite juice.”

Anyone above the age of 50 should take special measures to avoid unnecessary harm. “Medication is usually recommended to those over 50, and some of it is taken daily,” Sebastian explains. “Because alcohol may be poisonous to the [liver] and medications are bio converted in the liver, drinking while on medication puts the liver under a lot of strain.”
