Matt Shakman, a filmmaker, no longer bravely enters the Star Trek universe.

Due to schedule conflicts, Shakman, who was slated to direct a Trek film at Paramount, jumped to Fantastic Four for Marvel Studios instead. The film, which was scheduled for release on December 22, 2023, was a key priority for the Melrose Avenue-based company.

Matt Shakman is a tremendously gifted director, and Paramount Pictures regrets that the circumstances didn’t let him helm the future Star Trek movie. We are appreciative of his numerous contributions, pleased about the creative direction of this upcoming chapter, and eager to present it to audiences throughout the world.

In the TV industry, Shakman rose to prominence most recently with Marvel’s Emmy-winning series WandaVision. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia served as his introduction to television before he moved on to Game of Thrones. He became one of the most well-known and in-demand directors in town as a result of the success of Wandavision (the program had an astounding 24 Emmy nominations, won three of them, and also cemented its place in pop culture last year). In the summer of 2021, the director boarded the Star Trek picture. The most current iteration of the script was written by Josh Friedman and Cameron Squires, building on a draught by Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Lindsey Beer.

The crew of the rebooted Enterprise, which was initially featured in J.J. Abrams’ 2009 picture Star Trek, is expected to be reunited with Chris Pine in the long-in-development Trek movie. The cast includes actors including John Cho, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, and Zachary Quinto. Star Trek Beyond was the film in which they most recently appeared.

Before Paramount decided to move on with a fourth film in the Pine series, other directors, like Quentin Tarantino and Noah Hawley, had different ideas for the Star Trek franchise.

Although it’s not yet apparent if the release date will change, the hunt for a new director will start right away.
