Gandikota the village, in Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh, is located on the right bank of the Penna river.

It is 15 kilometres away from Jammalamadugu.

The historical fort got its name due to its deep ravine.

The name Gandikota can be divided into two parts, while gandi means canyon, kota in Telugu means fort.

The scenic gorge is located in between the Gandikota hills also known as Erramala ranges.

The Pennar river flows at the foot of the hills.

For many powerful dynasties over the years in history the fort was also the power center.

For dynasties such as the Pemmasani Nayakas, Kalyani Chalukyas, and also the Golconda Sultanate the Gandikota fort was an epicenter.

It was constructed by Pemmasani Ramalinga Nayaka at Gandikota.

Built with 101 towers it replaced the previous sand fort constructed by  Kalyani Chalukya rulers.

With the lock-down restrictions relaxing, if travel enthusiasts in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana are looking for a place to visit, then this place is worth visiting.

The gorge of the river is spectacular and no wonder Gandikota is often termed as the Grand Canyon of India.

The scenic location is as beautiful as the American name counterpart.

The picturesque location is open for travelers all year through.

But compared to summer, the other seasons are a better option to visit the place.

The location is a popular camping spot. Apart from the gandi/ canyon, visitors can also visit the fort.
