Lee outlined his vision for the series and his goals for the show’s overarching theme during an online press conference conducted yesterday (February 16). The filmmaker also discussed why he agreed to participate in the series despite his reservations when first approached.

According to The Korea Times, “it wasn’t simple for me to decide to lead this series.” “I was attracted by the series’ concept, ‘We Should Protect Our Planet Earth.'” Until recently, I’ve been perplexed as to why there are no programs or films in Korea concerning rescuing the planet. As a result, I teamed together with [writer Lee Soo-yeon].”

Grid, he said, was created to be a delicate sci-fi series with little visual effects, focused instead on building the imaginary universe. “There are a lot of sci-fi themes,” he continued, “but our series doesn’t have the visual effects of those.”

“It explores several storylines that the author wished to tell while being grounded in reality. We put a lot of work into effectively developing the imaginary universe because the premise is fairly unknown,” Lee added.

Actor Kim Mu-yeol (who plays Song Eo-jin in the series) described the narrative of Grid as “heavily based on the findings of genuine study” during the press conference. “I’ve heard the narrative was authored from a library,” he said. That’s how amazing and unexpected the narrative is.”

Disney+ earlier announced seven new original Korean titles as part of its foray into Asia-Pacific programming. Grid is one of them. Snowdrop, featuring Jisoo and Jung Hae-in from BLACKPINK, and Rookie Cops, starring Kang Daniel, are two of them.
