Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, a Canadian actress of Tamil heritage who is a role model for the younger generation, is earning back-to-back success with her superb acting. Her breakout performance as Devi in the Netflix series Never Have I Ever, and she received a lot of praise, and got adored by the audience.
Rrecently, Maitreyi discussed her role, and spoke about her character Devi in Never Have I Ever in an interview with Teen Vogue.
When the actress was asked about the criticism directed against her character Devi, Maitreyi said she does not feel compelled to defend the show. She does so because she believes the programme speaks for itself, and she recognises that not everyone will be able to relate to it. She goes on to say that this is why more representation is necessary. Maitreyi says that we can’t keep relying on Mindy Kaling to keep developing these shows, and that more people should step forward and do them.
Maitreyi went on to say that she considers the idea that her character Devi could not possibly represent every South Asian teen’s experience as she finds it “crazy” because there are so diverse cultures, accents, and backgrounds among South Asians.
Maitreyi also admitted that the character Devi is popular everyone has spoken things in anger, gossiped, and hurt someone they didn’t mean to.
Never Have I Ever is a series created by highly skilled Mindy Kaling. It chronicles the story of Devi, who loses the use of her legs for three months after her father dies.
