Veteran Malayalam actress Chithra who played memorable roles in some iconic films passed away on Saturday after suffering a cardiac arrest, in Saligramam, Chennai. She was 56. Chithra is survived by husband Vijayaraghavan and daughter Mahalakshmi.
The veteran actress’s untimely demise came as a shock to the Malayalam film industry. ‘Lucifer’ director Prithviraj Sukumaran took to his Instagram handle on Saturday to pay condolences. Sharing a photo of the yesteryear actress, he wrote: “Rest in Peace.”
About her life and career
In 1982, the actress appeared in a Hindi movie titled Razia and later was also a part of the 1984 film Ek Nai Paheli. She made her acting debut with K. Balachander’s film “Apoorva Raagangal”. The actress, who was popularly known as “Nallennai” Chithra, had worked in over 100 Tamil, Kannada Telugu and Malayalam films. She went on to star in other hit Malayalam dramas including Ekalavyan, Devasuram, Adavitam, Nadodi, Commissioner, Ustad and Aarau Thampuran.
Chithra was born as second child among three children in Kochi. She studied till X standard and couldn’t continue studies as she became busy in movies. She is married to Vijayaraghavan in 1990.The couple have a daughter Mahalakshmi. After marriage she retired from films and resided in Chennai.
