Teenage years of a child are full of mood swings, the ups and downs, the rebellion and finding your own self. Here are few tips by the renowned author and mother of two Sudha Murty.

  1. GIVE CHILDREN SPACE- She insists that children need their space most at this time, do not force your views and opinions on them. Help them become confident adults by giving them the freedom to discover their journey.
  2. SET EXAMPLES- If you want your kids to follow a certain path, rather than saying, show it. Forcing rules does not help, set an example. If you wish to cultivate a certain hobby or a routine in their lives, do it yourself and demonstrate how it helps.
  3. A SIMPLE LIFE- We are living in times where peer pressure is high and the social media has a huge impact on the children. Encourage your children to enjoy the simpler, smaller things in life.
  4. ENCOURAGE SELF-COMPERTITION- Rather than competing with others, children should be taught to be a better version of themselves. They should be encouraged to hon their own skills rather than what others do.
  5. LISTEN AND COMMUNICATE- Parents need to be friends to their kids, the days of a strict parent are over. Create a space where a child can talk openly about her fears. Make them feel loved, heard and respected.
  6. PROTECT THEM FROM BURNING OUT- All work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy, holds absolutely true even today. Strike a balance between work and play, help them to learn to manage their time and stress.

Positive parenting and an open communication helps to create strong bonds for life.
