Numerous iconic female squads have appeared in K-dramas over the years. This week, we choose a K-drama that has lately moved us to tears as our selection of the week. Three buddies who are thirty-nine years old are the central characters in Thirty-Nine. Thirty-Nine is a heartwarming narrative of friendship and life and is one of the most mature K-dramas we have seen. It stars the beautiful trio of brilliant actors Son Ye-jin, Jeon Mi-do, and Kim Ji-hyun.

Owner of the busy Gangnam Dermatology Clinic in the centre of Seoul, Cha Mi-jo (Son Ye-jin) chooses to take a year off to play golf in the US. Jeon Mi-do (Jeong Chan-young), an acting instructor, and Jang Joo-hee (Kim Ji-hyun), a cosmetics manager at a department store, are her two best friends. The play makes overt references to a saddening conclusion right from the start. However, the intention is not to turn off the audience but to entice them to observe the trip leading up to it.

Age is rarely viewed as merely a number by conventional social norms, especially for women who are barely past the forties. This duo, though, is determined not to let it bother them. There isn’t any irrational excitement, though. Instead, it creeps up on them and via their decisions. As a result, the play may appear to be dragging on as it nears its conclusion, but this slow pace is not out of the ordinary when days pass and you become aware that a close friend or family member is battling a fatal disease.

One of the three pals has cancer and is calculating her remaining days. And as the other two work to make her final days as happy as possible, we watch as they also manage their own love and lives. For the three friends, romance develops among it in a variety of ways, but this never overshadows their friendship, which is the focus of the narrative. In contrast to many K-dramas, Thirty-Nine does not revolve entirely around romantic love.
