There have been some new developments about Warner Bros.’ impending Superman film remake. Superman is one of the DC Comics heroes who has appeared in live-action television and movies several times. The Man of Steel narrative has been recounted in many forms for decades, with a variety of performers bringing the legendary hero to life. From Man of Steel through Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Henry Cavill was the most recent actor to represent Superman on the big screen as part of the DCEU.
There has been a lot of reorganization at DC Films and Warner Bros. in the previous several years, as the company continues to work on creating an interwoven world. In recent years, though, Warner Bros. has begun to toy with the concept of handling independent universes such as The Joker and The Batman. While Cavill’s Superman future is uncertain, the studio is considering a remake centered on a Black Man of Steel.
Following the completion of the Warner Bros. Discovery merger, the new studio is deciding how to proceed with its DC characters, including Superman. There haven’t been many updates on the Black Superman project, but Variety has some fresh information on the DC relaunch. Despite a script from novelist Ta-Nehisi Coates, Warner Bros. Discovery has yet to complete any clear plans for the Superman revival, according to the trade.
The next Superman film was initially revealed in February 2021, with J.J. Abrams as executive producer. While Abrams will not helm the revival, screenwriter and novelist Ta-Nehisi Coates has been hired to write the screenplay. Nothing came out of the project after the initial announcement until earlier this year, when rumors indicated that Coates was close to presenting a script to Warner Bros. According to reports, the reboot will feature a Black Clark Kent in the twentieth century.
If the claim is true, there might be a number of reasons why Warner Bros. hasn’t made any decisions about the Black Superman film. To begin with, the merger is still relatively new, and other DC projects are already further advanced in development and/or production than the reboot. While it appears like Warner Bros. Discovery is eager to bring Superman back to the big screen as soon as possible, it’s unclear whether Coates and Abrams’ project is the top priority. With Superman & Lois still on the air and Michael B. Jordan’s Val-Zod series in the works at HBO Max, the ultimate plans for the Black Superman relaunch will be interesting to watch.
