Prominent Bengali poet and critic Shankha Ghosh passes away on Wednesday while he was quarantine at his residence after testing positive of novel corona virus. The 89 year old got contracted with the virus on April 14 and was in home isolation. He was hospitalized few months back due to deterioration of his health condition.
He is survived by his wife Pratima and two daughters Semanti and Srabanti.
Shankha Ghosh was notably known for his books like ‘Adim Lata- Gulmomay’ and ‘Murkha Baro Samajik Nay’. In the year 1977, he received the Sahitya Akademi award for his book ‘Babarer Prarthana’. He has been vocal on various social and political issues. He has won several prestigious awards including Padma Bhushan award by the government of India in 2011 and also Jnanpith award in the year 2016. Not only this, his work has been translated into other languages as well namely in English and Hindi.
Ghosh was born in Chandpur (now in Bangladesh) on February 6, 1932. He did BA in Bangla language and literature at Presidency College, Calcutta (now Kolkata) and received his master’s degree from Calcutta University.
Bengali Poet- writer-editor Subodh Sarkar said, “Covid-19 snatched away Ghosh when he was needed the most as “the state was faced with the threat of fascism”. He was very soft-spoken but his pen was razor-sharp, always speaking against intolerance.”
