A controversy sparked by a video of two ladies dancing to Bollywood tunes at the Mahakaleshwar temple in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain led the state’s home minister to launch an investigation into the incident.

Two days prior, the women had visited the Mahakaleshwar temple to offer prayers. They recorded videos of themselves dancing to Bollywood music and posted them online.

The temple administration has requested that the ladies be punished.

Sources claim that when films were taken within the sanctum sanctorum and other areas of the temple, the priests were “very angry.”

Videos were produced to the beat of Bhakti and Bollywood tunes. One lady recorded the video while engaging in “jal abhishek” in the Mahakal temple’s sanctum sanctorum, and another recorded it while wandering the temple grounds.

Narottam Mishra, the home minister for Madhya Pradesh, has requested an investigation after becoming aware of the situation.

“I have given the Collector and the Superintendent of Police instructions to look into the situation. Any interference with religious convictions would not be accepted, according to Mishra.

The minister said that such actions undermine the sacredness of the temple and that people had to abstain from them.
