Anupam Kher, whose movie The Kashmir Files is the highest-grossing Hindi movie of the year, has offered his opinions on why Bollywood movies have struggled at the box office while South Indian movies have had great success over the same time period. The actor claimed that this is the case because South films give substance precedence while Bollywood movies concentrate on stars.

Nikhil Siddhartha plays the lead in Karthikeya 2, Anupam’s most recent Telugu movie, which dethroned Laal Singh Chaddha and Dobaaraa at the Hindi box office. In a recent interview on the film, Anupam commended the style of South Indian cinema.

Nikhil discussed the importance to monitor the mood of the audience in order to produce films that are timely. Anupam said, “You create stuff for consumers. The moment you begin thinking that by creating a fantastic movie, we are doing you a favor, that is when the problem begins. You are currently viewing a fantastic movie. I have learned that success requires teamwork when working on Telugu movies. I recently completed another Telugu film.

He said, “They are not copying Hollywood, therefore I don’t differentiate between the two, but I believe their movie is worthwhile. While we sell stars over here, they are telling stories.”

The follow-up to the 2014 film Karthikeya, Karthikeya 2 is a mystery-adventure movie written and directed by Chandoo Mondeti. The story follows Nikhil’s Dr. Karthikeya as he searches for Lord Krishna’s misplaced anklet. Anupam, who plays a supporting character in the movie, expressed his happiness at its success in a post on his Instagram page “The Kashmir Files ke baad meri Karthikeya 2 film bhi blockbuster hai, meri to nikal padi dosto! (My film Karthikeya 2, which came out after The Kashmir Files, is also a big hit.)”
