Guns and Gulaabs, a wonderful star cast slightly wasted with a dull plot.

Netflix has a plethora of good shows and I started watching ‘Guns and Gulaabs’ with huge expectations due to its wonderful star cast. The series is set in a small town of Gulaabganj, depicting the nineties era where opium was grown in plenty.

What a fantastic star-cast! Dulquer Salmaan as the dutiful, crisp cop, the rustic mechanic-Tipu, Rajkumar Rao, Satish Kaushik-the leader of drug mafia, his son trying to prove his mettle; Adarsh Gourav and others who contribute to the success of the series. Written, directed and produced by Raj and DK and co-written by Suman Kumar, this show could have been tad bit better.

The series takes us back to the good old days where there are no mobile phones and it was so nostalgic to see that, Luna. The first four series are extremely slow. The plot is old, the drug trade and the mafia trying to beat the police. However, from the 5th episode, the story picks up.

Rajkumar Rao, is the perfect next-door good guy who wants to stay away from crime and his father’s legacy of crime and works as a mechanic. A sudden twist of destiny leads to a sudden murder committed by him and hence, he gets drawn into the crime world.

The series has a good execution, stellar performances, some twists but the pace is slow. It has an overstuffed narrative with lots happening at once and a drag in several parts. I wish the terrific female cast was used better.

Overall, an easy watch. See it on Netflix.
