Joe Alwyn and Andrew Scott have varied filmography to date. Andrew has done it all, whether it was haunting Sherlock or serenading Fleabag, while Joe has had his fair share of noteworthy parts in biopics, fantasy thrillers, and other films. In their forthcoming coming-of-age period drama Catherine Called Birdy, the two are now being transported to medieval England. In a recent exclusive interview with Hindustan Times, the two actors talked about the movie and their respective roles.

Based on Karen Cushman’s 1994 young adult novel of the same name, Catherine Called Birdy examines the 13th century through the eyes of its 14-year-old lead Lady Catherine, also known as Birdy (played by Bella Ramsey). Andrew portrays Birdy’s father Lord Rollo, who she perceives as a dictator, although he claims the role is more complex than that. Although Birdy perceives him as a domineering father, which he is to some extent, he also works to find a suitable marriage for his daughter since that’s how families used to function in the past.

Joe portrays Birdy’s uncle George, a figurehead and type of perfect man in her eyes. Joe claims that depicting the character’s development and how Birdy begins to understand him as a flawed human being too was the true joy. In his opinion, a small change in his acts or behavior is more important than a significant change in how Birdy perceives him. Prior to leaving for the Crusades, he was this idealized brilliant prince. And upon returning, he has undergone a significant change. Birdy does not recognize that immediately away and she elevates him.

Billie Piper, Dean-Charles Chapman, and Isis Hainsworth all appear in Lena Dunham’s film Catherine Called Birdy, which also has cameo appearances by Russell Brand and Ralph Ineson. The movie debuts on Prime Video on October 7 after a September 23 limited release.
