Actor Johnny Depp sue his ex-wife Amber Heard for defamation over a 2018 op-ed she penned for the Washington Post where she described herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse.”
Depp sued the “Aquaman” actress for $50 million, while Heard countersued the star best known for his “Pirates of the Caribbean” series for $100 million. She accused him of a “smear campaign” against her and described the lawsuit as a continuation of his “abuse and harassment.”
Johnny Depp releases a statement: “Six years later the jury gave me my life back; the truth never perishes. I am truly humbled.”
He also thanked all the fans for their undying support. The star says this verdict will help other victims of abuse, men or women, to come forward and tell the truth.
He writes, “I am, and I have been, overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and the colossal support and kindness from around the world. I hope my quest to have the truth be told will have helped others, men or women, who have found themselves in this situation and that those supporting them never give up. I also hope that the position will now return to innocent until proven guilty, both within the courts and in the media.”
He thanked the judge, the jurors, the court staff, and Sheriffs who have sacrificed their time to help him and his diligent legal team who have done an amazing job in helping him.
Amber Heard on the other hand is heartbroken by the verdict. “The disappointment I feel today is beyond words. I am heartbroken that the mountain of evidence still was not enough to stand up to the disproportionate power, influence, and sway of my ex-husband,” Amber sadly comments.
The jury awarded the actor $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages.
