Jurassic World Dominion ate up an estimated $143.4 million from 4,676 locations in its American debut. The summer tentpole grossed a total of $389 million worldwide on Sunday, as the box office rebound continued.

Top Gun: Maverick, the third entry in Universal and Amblin’s Jurassic World trilogy, comfortably topped the weekend, while crowd favorite Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom slid to No. 2 in its third trip. However, as it reaches the $400 million mark in the United States, Top Gun 2 continues to outperform. After adding another $52.7 million abroad, the Paramount and Sky dance film grossed $50 million for a domestic total of $393.3 million and a jet-fueled $747 million worldwide.

Jurassic World is a film based on the Jurassic Dominion came in second behind Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom ($148 million) in 2018 and third to Jurassic World ($208.8 million) in 2015, yet it had one of the biggest opening weekends of the epidemic era. It even outperformed Top Gun 2’s $126.7 million three-day debut, albeit the comparison isn’t fair because Maverick’s four-day debut was $260 million.

The picture was panned by critics, but audiences loved it, giving it an A- Cinema Score and strong PostTrak exits. On Rotten Tomatoes, Jurassic World Dominion currently has the lowest score of any title in the legendary dinosaur franchise, with a score of 34%.

Dominion is removing Imax and premium big format displays from Top Gun: Maverick, which is an advantage. Another plus: Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Sam Neill, and BD Wong, who starred in director Steven Spielberg’s original Jurassic Park film, are reuniting for the first time (1993).

After missing Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom, director and Jurassic World architect Colin Trevorrow is back to direct Jurassic World Dominion, the last instalment in the Jurassic World trilogy starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard.
