Kanye West, the Grammy Award-winning rapper who has gone by the name Ye for years, has reportedly filed court documents to make his name official. The rapper wishes to officially change it to ‘Ye,’ which is also his name on his social media accounts. According to Variety, West stated in his petition that the name change is for the sake of his “personal reasons.”
According to Los Angeles Superior Court documents obtained by The Associated Press, the rapper, 44, formally filed a petition to change his name from Kanye Omari West to just Ye, with no middle or last name. The name will official change after a California judge sign it off. Many fans of the rapper are already aware of his name Ye, as this is not the first time that Kanye is trying to change his name.
Earlier, the rapper revealed his desire to be known as Ye in a tweet from 2018 in which he wrote, “the being formally known as Kanye West. I am YE.” On Twitter and Instagram, the rapper goes by the name ‘Ye’, and therefore many of his fans are already aware of this name. Not only that, but Ye was also the title of his 2018 album, for which he explained what it meant during its promotions. Speaking on the same Kanye told TMZ that, “I believe ‘ye’ is the most commonly used word in the Bible, and in the Bible it means “you.”
West’s legal petition to change his name comes amid his divorce from six years of marriage with Kim Kardashian earlier this year in February. Kanye’s name change also comes as he prepares for a third album listening event ahead of the release of his tenth studio album, Donda.
