The Tamil Superstar Rajinikanth will be honoured with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award this year. The award is presented annually and is India’s highest award in cinema. 

Union Minister Prakash Javadekar took to twitter to make the announcement. He tweeted, “Happy to announce #Dadasaheb Phalke award for 2019 to one of the greatest actors in history of Indian cinema Rajnikant ji. His contribution as actor, producer and screenwriter has been iconic. I thank jury @ashabhosle @SubhashGhai1 @Mohanlal @Shankar_Live #BiswajeetChatterjee.”

Earlier, the 70-year-old legendary actor also won Prestigious Padma Bhusan in 2000 and the Padma Vibhusan in 2016. Rajinikanth is the 12th South Indian superstar to be honoured with Dadasaheb Phalke Award. He began his career in 1975 and rose to become a star after initially playing the role of an antagonist in his early films.

In the last four decades, the actor has been a part of iconic movies like Moondru Mudichu (1976), Vayathinline (1977), Ninaithale Inikkum (1979), Thillu Mullu (1981), Bloodstone (1988), Thalapathi (1991), Annamalai (1992), Baasaha (1995), Sivaji (2007),Enthiran (2010), 2.0 (2018) to name a few.
