Singer Nikhil Dsouza, who has been in the music business for 12 years, acknowledges that Bollywood opportunities have dwindled for him. Dsouza has only had a few releases in the past two years. He responds when asked whether there aren’t any offers from Bollywood, “Yeah that’s true.”

Labels have properly taken control, Dsouza begins by saying, “The scenario has fundamentally shifted in Bollywood. These labels began signing musicians to themselves about nine years ago. As a result, only such vocalists began to receive major song roles in movies. This is because the label benefits greatly from the singers and whatever they do. Even the live events, their primary source of income, are their property. Therefore, your chances of having a major song in the movie are slim if you are not signed to a label. A tertiary tune that could be better marketed could be found elsewhere. The labels won’t support a song featuring an artist who isn’t under contract with them.

The vocalist of Aate Jaate claims that independent music has “always” been his main emphasis in order to maintain his originality. “I haven’t been signed for the exact reason that I make a lot of independent music. The reason you don’t hear my voice very much is that if I sign with a major label, I would have to make some severe concessions. Unless something changes on that front, you probably won’t hear any huge tunes from me in movies for a long.

Dsouza recently sang for Saathiya, a number in Akshay Kumar’s Cuttputlli, as well as a song with the Pune-based band Easy Wanderings.
