Chris Columbus, the filmmaker of the original Home Alone, has spoken out against the impending reboot and Hollywood remakes in general.

Home Sweet Home Alone, the latest instalment in the Christmas franchise, will premiere on Disney+ later this week, but it appears that Columbus will be missing out. The director, who also directed the first two Harry Potter films, recently spoke with Reel Blend about “the purpose,” as well as Hollywood’s current lack of inventiveness.

“Everyone is redoing and reinventing everything in this version of Hollywood that we live in,” he remarked. “I mean, there’s a reboot of Home Alone on the way.” What’s the goal of it all? Let’s simply accept that the movie exists and live with it.

“There’s no purpose in our replicating The Wizard of Oz, or any of the old classics for that matter.” Make something unique, since we need more unique content. As a result, no. “There’s no point.”

Columbus has already expressed his opposition to the revival, telling Insider last year: “I’m a big believer that you don’t recreate pictures with the endurance of Home Alone.”

“You won’t be able to conjure lightning in a bottle again.” It’s simply not going to work out. So, why are you doing it? It’s like making a live-action version of a Disney cartoon picture using a paint-by-numbers approach. What’s the goal of it all? It’s been completed.”

Archie Yates, Ellie Kemper, Rob Delaney, Aisling Bea, Pete Holmes, and Kenan Thompson are scheduled to feature in Home Sweet Home Alone, with Devin Ratray reprising his role as Buzz McCallister from the first two films.
