The Sony and Marvel superhero blockbuster has surpassed the initial run of Avatar at the American box office to become the third-highest grossing film of all time, not adjusted for inflation. By Tuesday, the photo should have reached the goal.

No Way Home made another $9.6 million over the weekend, bringing its total to $749 million, only $1 million short of James Cameron’s Avatar’s initial domestic gross of $749.8 million (not adjusted for inflation).

With $760.5 million in domestic profits, including earnings from later rereleases, Avatar is the third highest-grossing picture of all time. No Way Home is expected to gross in excess of $760 million, but there are no guarantees.

Avatar is still the highest-grossing film of all time, with $2.84 billion in worldwide box office receipts. It was overshadowed for a while by Avengers: Endgame, until it was rereleased in China in March 2021.

Overseas, No Way Home has grossed over $1.02 billion for a worldwide total of $1.77 billion, making it the sixth highest-grossing film of all time, not adjusted for inflation. The achievement is all the more astounding given that the superhero film has yet to be released in China, which is now the world’s largest box office market.

Since its December premiere on the big screen, No Way Home has broken one record after another. On its way to becoming one of the most successful films of all time, the film is the first Hollywood tentpole to accomplish pre-pandemic level business.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936.7 million) is the highest-grossing film in the United States, followed by Avengers: Endgame ($858.4 million), Avatar, and Spider-Man: No Way Home.
