A good night’s sleep is just as important as eating healthy or practicing regular exercise. Lack of sleep not only affects your mental health but also results in increasing body weight. Sound sleep is extremely necessary for a peaceful mind. It helps to concentrate properly and think clearly.

If you are one who is tired of tossing and turning in bed during night time, then these simple tips will help you sleep better and feel refreshed and energetic during the day.

  • Increase natural light exposure

Light is a very important factor affecting sleep, it plays a major role in regulating circadian rhythm, body’s internal clock that signals when to be alert and when to rest. For how long we are exposed to natural light directly affects your sleep.

Take your work breaks outside in sunlight or exercise outside during the day; it will help you get proper sleep during night time.

Circadian rhythm is an internal clock in our body that coordinates a wide range of processes in the body. This rhythm is controlled by a circadian pacemaker, a small part in the brain, which is influenced by the light exposure. When light enters our eye, it is sensed by the retina, which is interpreted in the brain about the time of the day. Then the brain sends signals to the entire body to control in accordance to what time of the day it is.

Therefore, it is advisable to the sleep deprived individuals to get exposed to natural light during the day time as it helps to increase the sleeping pattern.

  • Reduce blue light exposure

The blue light emitted from your phone, laptop, computer, tablets, gaming system or television messes with your body’s ability to prepare sleep as it blocks the hormone called melatonin that is responsible to make you fall asleep. The blue light gives off wavelength in the range 400 to 490 nanometers. The best and simplest way to lower the exposure to artificial blue lights is to turn off all your devices before bedtime.

Mental Health

One can even buy blue light blocking glasses or can install apps on your phone to reduce the effect of artificial lights on your body.

  • Reduce irregular or daytime naps

Taking naps at irregular interval of time or for too long naps can sometimes backfire on you. Napping is not for everyone. If you already are struggling from sleep deprivation then you should avoid taking naps during day time especially after 3 pm as it will hamper your night sleep. If you are willing to take a nap then keep it short for 10 to 20 minutes. Long naps might worsen the sleep quality at night.

  • Take a relaxing shower

As per research, if you want to fall asleep faster at night then try taking a hot bath before crashing your bed. The hot water bath helps to change core body temperature so that you go to bed with lower temperature. As the temperature of your body drops, it signals to your brain that it’s time for bed.

  • Get yourself a comfortable mattress and pillow

One must never sleep on ancient mattresses and pillows as they may cause issues like asthma and allergies as they accumulate dust over the period of time. For those who struggle to get proper sleep at night, then they must try changing them, as an uncomfortable mattress and pillow can interfere with your ability to get a proper good night’s sleep.

Mental Health

Staying at home amid the pandemic brings a whole lot of challenges to your mental health. Globally people are facing anxiety issues, depression, stress and stigma.

For many of us, traveling is the ultimate stress reliever but covid-19 has packed humans at home and we can’t even step out to interact with different people to enlighten and motivate ourselves.

Covid-19 has brought a certain amount of uncertainty and loss and is not just affecting humans professionally but also personally. Daily stress can play havoc with our health even for a long term.

Here are few things that can help an individual to keep themselves sane and motivated amid the crisis:

Physical exercise

Regular exercise helps to uplift self-confidence, improve your mood, lower down the symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Practice any form of exercise that you like. It will help to increase your fitness level while decreasing your stress. Simple activity which can be easily done indoors like walking, stair climbing, dancing, yoga can work wonders in such difficult times. Start slow, so that you can stick to your program. If you will start with an intense workout, it will exhaust you completely and no motivation will be left to exercise the next day. If you don’t like to exercise daily, then at least try to work out 3 to 4 days in a week to see the results.

Eat healthy

This is the best time to inculcate the habit of eating healthy home cooked food as restaurants are shut and home deliveries are also not available in most of the areas. Eating healthy food can reduce stress levels and may act as a mood enhancer. Unhealthy eating patterns can increase stress levels and potentially increase the risk of major health problems in future if you don’t address them on time.

Develop a habit of eating a balanced and healthy diet to manage psychological changes. Start your day with a healthy breakfast. Avoid having sugary drinks, too much caffeine, refined foods, and unnecessary carbs. Rather, increase protein intake, have seasonal fruits, fibers, vegetables, beans, whole grains and drink plenty amount of water.

Most importantly, if you have a habit of emotional eating, avoid it! Try not to reach for food when you are feeling stressed as it increases bloating, gas and you become prone to discomfort.

Meditate

Mindfulness meditation helps to improve focus and concentration. It improves self-esteem, self-awareness and lowers the stress, anxiety and depression.  Meditation helps to discover positive attributes about yourself; it helps to train your mind to focus on the present and helps to eliminate anxious thoughts that can fuel depression.

Mental Health

Not just this, if you have addiction of smoking or drinking and you want to overcome your addictions then meditation is the key. It helps to alter brain receptors associated with the addictions and it may reduce cravings for such substances.  Meditation helps to have positive outlook, self-discipline, healthy sleep patterns and even increase chronic pain tolerance.

Playful Activities

Choose some playful activity of your interest that will bring joy and laughter like playing board games or cleaning your house, or simply gardening, listening to music more often, try doodling or painting or just being a couch potato while binge watching. Such activities will help to divert your mind from the ongoing crisis and will keep you in the present moment with a light-hearted focus and laughter that will come to you naturally.

Reading

Reading not only helps to increase knowledge but also helps to decrease blood pressure, lower heart rate and reduce stress. Reading can help to escape from the stress of everyday life. Invite yourself to the literary world which will relax your body and ease out tension in your muscles. Books are an endless source of history, humor, romance, fantasy, comic and whatever you might be craving for. Find a book of your interest and make a routine to read every day at least for 30 minutes in a quiet place.

Covid-19

As the impact of Covid-19 pandemic has brought the world wide economy to a halt, millions and millions of employees have been fired, furloughed or are informed that they might lose their jobs due to the Covid-19.

The burden of the crisis has fallen heavily across the globe, workers and businesses are facing catastrophe in both developed and developing countries. The number is jaw dropping – more than 1.6 billion are affected by full or partial workplace closures.

A huge plunge in consumer spending power can be seen as they are staying at home and are avoiding shopping, traveling or gatherings in public places as the virus has left the economy sinking. Industries and companies are facing the markdowns because of the clear economic damage the virus is doing.

Restaurants, clubs, cinema halls, malls, airlines, hotels and other businesses were shut down at the start of the year and remained closed for months which has impacted in huge losses and have increased the rate of unemployment as they were unable to afford to pay to their workers. Around 2 billion people across the globe work in the informal sector and are particularly at risk.

In just over a month’s time, from March to April in 2020, unemployment rates have drastically increased. In the US the unemployment rate increased from 4.4% to 14.7%. In Australia, the rates increased from 5.4% to 11.7%.  Whereas in India, the unemployment rate in March 2020 was recorded 8.8% which climbed straight to 23.5% in April 2020 while 21.7% was recorded in May 2020.

Covid-19

However, the government in many countries is helping many businesses under the furlough scheme to keep their staff on by helping to pay their wages. Under this scheme millions of jobs have been protected since the pandemic began.

The unemployment situation is so serious that developed nation like USA is extending the Corona virus Aid Relief, and economic Security (CARES) Act are providing unemployment benefits to self-employed and part-time workers through Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Assistance.

If the unemployment results for a prolonged period then it can lead to erosion of skills, basically robbing the economy of useful talents. Not just this, prolonged unemployment will hamper the savings of an individual’s which can force families  to deny educational opportunities of their children which will result in depriving the economy of those future skills. The pandemic will eventually go away, but the consequences across the globe will be felt for many years to come.
